چکیده

In OLAP applications, data are modeled as points in a mul-tidimensional space. Dimensions themselves have structure, described by a schema and an instance; the schema is basically a directed acyclic graph of granularity levels, and the instance consists of a set of elements for each level and mappings between these elements, usually called rollup functions. Current dimension models restrict dimensions in various ways; for example, rollup functions are restricted to be total. We relax these restrictions , yielding what we call heterogeneous schemas, which describe more naturally and cleanly many practical situations. In the context of heterogeneous schemas, the notion of summarizability becomes more complex. An aggregate view deened at some granularity level is sum-marizable from a set of precomputed views deened at other levels if the rollup functions can be used to compute the rst view from the set of views. In order to study summarizability in heterogeneous schemas, we introduce a class of constraints on dimension instances that enrich the semantics of dimension hierarchies, and we show how to use the constraints to characterize and test for summarizability.

A Multidimensional Data Model with Subcategories for Flexibly Capturing Summarizability (extended version)

In multidimensional (MD) databases and data warehouses we commonly prefer instances that have summarizable dimensions. This is because they have good properties for query answering. Most typically, with summarizable dimensions, precomputed and materialized aggregate query results at lower levels of the dimension hierarchy can be used to correctly compute results at higher levels of the same hie...

Repair - Oriented Relational Schemas for Multidimensional Databases ∗ ( second extended version )

Summarizability in a multidimensional (MD) database refers to the correct reusability of pre-computed aggregate queries (or views) when computing higher-level aggregations or rollups. A dimension instance has this property if and only if it is strict and homogeneous. A dimension instance may fail to satisfy either of these two semantics conditions, and has to be repaired, restoring strictness a...

YAM2 (Yet Another Multidimensional Model): An Extension of UML

This paper presents a multidimensional conceptual Object-Oriented model, its structures, integrity constraints and query operations. It has been developed as an extension of UML core metaclasses to facilitate its usage, as well as to avoid the introduction of completely new concepts. YAM2 allows the representation of several semantically related star schemas, as well as summarizability and iden...

A Model-Driven Approach for Enforcing Summarizability in Multidimensional Modeling

The development of a data warehouse system is based on a conceptual multidimensional model, which provides a high level of abstraction in the accurate and expressive description of real-world situations. Once this model has been designed, the corresponding logical representation must be obtained as the basis of the implementation of the data warehouse according to one specific technology. Howev...

A survey on summarizability issues in multidimensional modeling

The development of a data warehouse (DW) system is based on a conceptual multidimensional model, which provides a high level of abstraction in accurately and expressively describing real-world situations. Once this model is designed, the corresponding logical representation must be obtained as the basis of the implementation of the DW according to one specific technology. However, even though a...
